Hey there, QUEEN!

Today, I want to share a personal experience with you—a story of fear, courage, and the exhilaration of achieving what we truly deserve. Let me take you on a journey through my own experience of asking for a raise and the joyous outcome that followed!

The Decision to Ask for a Raise:

In the month of May, after being at my job for two and a half years, I built up the courage to ask for a raise. Let me tell you, sis, I was scared to the core! Thoughts of rejection and uncertainty flooded my mind, but deep down, I knew I had to take this leap of faith, for myself. I believed in my performance, my value, and the contributions I made to the company. I knew, without a doubt, that I deserved a raise.

Your accomplishments speak volumes, sis. Let your achievements be the foundation of your request for a well-deserved raise.

Preparing for the Conversation:

It took weeks for me to build up the courage to approach the conversation. During that time, I dedicated myself to thorough market research. I explored positions similar to mine in the same industry, focusing on those with comparable experience. I recorded my findings, noting the disparities between the market salary and my current compensation. With this knowledge, I confidently determined the salary I desired and meticulously prepared my reasoning to present to my manager.

Approaching the Conversation:

The day of our 1-on-1 arrived, and my nerves were at an all-time high. When my manager asked if there was anything I wanted to discuss, I took a deep breath and blurted out, "Actually, yes, can we discuss my compensation? I would like to request a raise." I spoke so fast, fueled by nerves and anticipation. But you know what, sis? My manager's response was an emphatic "Absolutely!"

I seized the opportunity and shared my case. I explained that I considered myself an invaluable asset to the company, highlighting how my current compensation fell short of the market rates and failed to reflect my responsibilities and the quality of my work. With confidence, I revealed my requested salary.

The Outcome and Lessons Learned:

With butterflies in my stomach I was excited to hear my manager responded positively, expressing his desire for the best for me. He requested that I send him the market research, and my updated resume showcasing my quantifiable achievements. As a bonus I included a memo reiterating why I deserved a raise, and summarizing our conversation. My manager especially loved I added the memo he said, "It displayed how professional and prepared [I am]".

When the much-anticipated moment arrived, I received the news—my raise was granted, falling a bit short than what I requested, but I was still very pleased and happy that I took the courage to ask!

My experience taught me an invaluable lesson, sis. Despite the fear and nervousness, I embraced my worth and prepared myself thoroughly. I believed in my abilities, and that belief paid off. By showcasing my value, providing concrete evidence, and approaching the conversation with professionalism, I secured the raise I deserved.

So, my incredible sisters, let my story be a beacon of hope and inspiration. Never underestimate the power of your capabilities, your dedication, and your worth. Believe in yourself, do your research, and bravely ask for what you deserve. The journey may be nerve-wracking, but the rewards are immeasurable.

Here are some tips to guide you on your own journey:

  1. Know Your Worth: Sis, it's time to acknowledge your brilliance! Before even thinking about approaching your employer, take a moment to reflect on your skills, achievements, and the unique value you bring to the table. Research salary ranges for your position, considering factors such as your industry, location, and experience. Remember, you are exceptional and worthy of every dime!

  2. Timing is Key: Timing, sis, is crucial when it comes to asking for a raise. Choose a moment when your boss is approachable, in a positive mood, and not overwhelmed with other demands. Aim for a time near your performance review or after accomplishing a significant project, when your impact is fresh in their memory.

  3. Showcase Your Excellence: It's your time to shine, queen! Gather a list of your major accomplishments, highlighting how you've consistently exceeded expectations, contributed to the company's success, or mentored others. Share specific examples that demonstrate your positive influence and the value you've brought to your team and the organization. Own your brilliance, sis!

  4. Rehearse and Radiate Confidence: Confidence is your superpower, sis! Take some time to practice your pitch before the big conversation. Enlist a supportive friend or family member to role-play as your boss, throwing in challenging questions or objections. The more you rehearse, the more you'll exude confidence and charisma.

  5. Determine Your Desired Number: You deserve more, sis! Research salary data for your role, industry, and location. Consider your skills, experience, and the unique perspective you bring as a black or brown woman. Determine a realistic and fair salary increase that reflects your worth. Be ready for negotiation and counteroffers. Remember, you are invaluable!

  6. Emphasize Future Goals: Let your employer see your ambition, sis! Discuss your long-term aspirations and how you plan to grow within the company. Highlight your commitment to continuous improvement and express your desire to contribute to the organization's success. Your dreams are valid, queen!

  7. Maintain Your Professionalism: During the conversation, remain poised, professional, and unapologetically yourself. Stay respectful, even if the outcome isn't what you anticipated. Remember, your power and grace will always leave a lasting impression.

  8. Be Open to Alternatives: Sometimes, sis, a salary increase might not be immediately feasible. But don't fret! Be open to exploring other options, such as additional benefits, professional development opportunities, or a flexible schedule. Your total compensation package should reflect your worth and priorities.

  9. Follow Up with Gratitude: After your conversation, send a heartfelt thank-you note/email to your boss, expressing gratitude for their time and consideration. Regardless of the outcome, maintaining positive relationships is crucial for your future growth and opportunities.
